Role of Ultrasound in Cancer Diagnosis and Staging

Ultrasound contributes to oncologic care by characterizing superficial masses guiding biopsies assessing nodal status and monitoring treatment response and it is often used alongside cross sectional imaging to provide complementary information. For certain tumors such as breast thyroid and testicular lesions ultrasound offers high resolution evaluation and real time guidance for tissue sampling. In staging ultrasound assesses regional lymph nodes and documents extent of local invasion for surgical planning. Serial ultrasound examinations monitor tumor size vascularity and response to therapy and provide rapid bedside assessment when clinical changes occur.

Image Guided Biopsy and Specimen Handling

Ultrasound guided core needle biopsy is a cornerstone of tissue diagnosis and requires precise targeting of suspicious areas while avoiding necrotic zones and adjacent structures. Real time visualization of needle trajectory improves sampling accuracy and immediate assessment of specimen adequacy by on site cytology when available reduces nondiagnostic rates. Proper labeling and transport of specimens and clear communication with pathology about clinical context and imaging findings support accurate histopathologic correlation. Documentation of number of cores and of any complications informs clinical management and quality monitoring.

Monitoring Response and Interventional Applications

Ultrasound monitors response to systemic therapy and to locoregional treatments by measuring lesion size vascularity and internal architecture and by guiding percutaneous ablation and drainage procedures. Contrast enhanced ultrasound and elastography provide additional biomarkers of perfusion and stiffness that may reflect treatment effect earlier than size changes. Interventional ultrasound supports minimally invasive tumor ablation and targeted drug delivery and requires multidisciplinary planning and careful post procedure surveillance. Integrating ultrasound findings with clinical and laboratory data enhances assessment of therapeutic efficacy and informs ongoing care decisions.
