Pulmonary Edema Basics

Pulmonary edema occurs when fluid accumulates in lung tissue and alveoli impairing gas exchange and reducing oxygenation efficiency.

Hydrostatic Pressure

Increased hydrostatic pressure forces fluid into alveoli and is commonly seen in heart failure.

Permeability Changes

Increased capillary permeability allows fluid to leak into alveoli during inflammation or injury.

Gas Exchange Impact

Fluid filled alveoli reduce diffusion capacity and cause significant hypoxemia.

Clinical Treatment

Treatment includes oxygen diuretics and addressing underlying causes to restore lung function.
