Hal O Anger developed the scintillation camera in the 1950s which allowed planar imaging of gamma ray emitting radiotracers and his device improved sensitivity spatial resolution and imaging speed compared with earlier detectors and became a foundational instrument for nuclear medicine departments

Clinical Applications and Expansion

The Anger camera enabled routine scintigraphy of the skeleton thyroid kidneys and other organs and supported the growth of functional imaging studies and later integration with tomographic techniques expanded quantitative capabilities and clinical utility

Legacy in Nuclear Medicine Instrumentation

Angers camera design principles persist in modern gamma cameras and in hybrid SPECT CT systems and his contributions accelerated adoption of nuclear medicine as a clinical specialty and supported the development of radiopharmaceutical based diagnostics and therapies
