First Human Cardiac Catheterization
Werner Forssmann performed a landmark self catheterization experiment in 1929 when he inserted a catheter into his own arm vein and advanced it into his right atrium and then documented the procedure with radiography which demonstrated the feasibility of intracardiac catheterization and opened the path to diagnostic and therapeutic cardiac catheter techniques
Clinical and Technological Consequences
Forssmann’s demonstration established a method for direct cardiac measurement and for contrast based cardiac imaging and it ultimately enabled development of coronary angiography hemodynamic assessment and percutaneous interventions and his work later received recognition for its transformative impact on cardiology
